This study provides a historical account of democracy and
federalism in Pakistan. The paper gives an overview of the federal
structure in Pakistan and shows that how the diversified nature of its
polity can be accommodated in pursuing federalism as a system of
governance. Pakistan is of course a federation of multiple
nationalities and ethnic groups hence federalism best suits the
country. Within the federal framework the federating units or
provinces enjoy a certain degree of autonomy. Whereas, the
federalism in Pakistan has been successful in ensuring unity with
cultural, social, historical and economic diversity of the federating
units, the paper however highlights some of the gaps that could
possibly provide a grounds for resentments and disillusion. The
research provides some the prudent suggestions for bridging such
gaps. Similarly, for democracy the thesis presents a brief account of
democratic dispensations in the country. The paper attempts to
analyse the reasons and consequences of the failure of democracy in
Pakistan, and argues that how and why democracy is imperative for
sustainable economic, polity and federation of Pakistan.
