The ‘Save Karachi Movement’ had started in 1947, when the
central government in newly born Pakistan had made Karachi the
capital of the country and it was announced that the Karachi would be
separated from Sindh province and the capital of the Sindh province
would be moved to Hyderabad. This enraged the people of Sindh who
perceived the decision of the central government as unjust. The Save
Karachi Movement is considered as the first Sindhi ethno-nationalist
movement in newly born Pakistan. Still there is very little written about
this movement in Sindh and outside Sindh. So far, no proper academic
research is conducted on this subject. This paper is an attempt to fill
that gap in the academic literature. In this paper, the Save Karachi
Movement is studied as a non-violent movement. Using the theory of
non-violent action, it is explored in this research paper that what kind
of methods and techniques of non-violent action were used in this
movement to achieve the main object of saving Karachi from being
separated from Sindh province. Moreover, the techniques used by the
central government to diffuse the non-violent Save Karachi Movement
are also discussed in this paper.
