Using social learning theory as support, this study aims to empirically quantify the role of the supervisor in determining the performance of postgraduate research students. To accomplish this, the underlying structure of items were identified and validated via exploratory factor analysis and confirmatory factor analysis. Furthermore, the hypothesised relationships were tested via CB-SEM (AMOS). Employing 127 valid responses, it was estimated that supervisor factor explains 33% of the variance in the performance of postgraduate research students. The regression weight for supervisor factor in the prediction of the performance of postgraduate research students is also significantly different from 0 at the 0.05 level (twotailed). Interestingly, it was also found that the structural model fits the social learning perspective well. Thus, the present study concludes that the better the quality of research supervision the more capable and confident the postgraduate research students are in learning and conducting research independently.
