Business and Economic Status of Sindhi Language: Historical Perspective
Abstract
the language of administration, education, literature, culture,
trade and commerce and also medium religious teachings since
many centuries. Dr. R.K Mookergy has stated in his book
“History of Indian Shipping and their Own Township”that“it is
now believed that the Egyptians wrapped their mummies in
Sindhi cloth, establishing a commercial connection between
Sindhi and Egypt”. Since the Medieval times Sindhi has been
identified as trader’s language. Before the advent of printing
technology, the trading community had developed distinct
writing system called “Hat Waniki”. British paid proper attention
towards Sindhi language and declared it language for official
business. During this period, Sindhi business was at its peak
and Sindhi Workis were spread all over the word due to their
fair and standard business. They introduced new terminology
like “Hundi”, “Roz Namcho”, “Khato”, “Devalo”, “Viyaj”, “Nafo &
Nuqsan” etc. The business record keeping was maintained
properly in decent manner in Sindhi language. With the
migration of Hindu Sindhi traders, use of business and
commerce language suffered a lot, as reigns of business in
Sindh was in the hands of Hindu Sindhi community.
