A Comparative Study of the Terms: Dictionary, Lexicon, Vocabulary, Glossary, Thesaurus and Encyclopaedia
Abstract
‘Language’ is a non-material aspect of culture, by
which human beings express their thoughts, opinions and
ideas, and for this purpose meaningful words are used in all
languages of the world.
It is not simple for a human to know and use all words
in their own language or other languages. It is an essential
need to use a dictionary or a thesaurus when we read, write or
get education at various levels.
Words are arranged and explained in different ways in
various types of dictionaries, vocabulary lists, glossaries and
thesauruses according to the needs of learners, experts and
common persons. Encyclopaedias are also compiled at macro
and micro levels in which write ups are included about many
topics and subjects.
In this research paper, I have done a comparative study
of the terms: Dictionary, Lexicon, Vocubalry, Glossary,
Thesaurus and Encyclopaedia and dispelled some
misunderstandings about them being synonyms, pinpointing
the slight differences between each of these terms
