OF
DRAMAS OF WILLIAM SHAKESPEARE
Abstract
William Shakespeare (1564–1616) was great English poet, playwright
and actor, widely regarded as both the greatest writer in the English
language and the world's pre-eminent dramatist. He is often called
England's national poet". His extant works, including collaborations,
consist of approximately sonnets, two long poems, and a few other
verses, some of uncertain authorship. His plays have been translated into
every major and are performed more often than those of any other
playwright. He is called writer of every age because he has left his
influence on every literary language in every age and movement.
As soon as Sindhi people learnt English, they began to read world
literature through English language. Likewise, Shakespeare also became
favorite writer among Sindhi writers and elites. First ever Dramatic
Society was established at Sindh Arts College (later D.J College) in 1894
but Bombay Dramatic Companies were coming to Sindh to play stage
dramas since 1877. From 19th century to onwards Shakespearean
influence is evident on Sindhi literature, writers like Mirza Qaleech Baig,
Jethmal Pursram, Bherumal Maharchand, Usman Ansari and many
others translated plays of Shakespeare. But Mirza Qaleech Baig is known
as “Shakespeare of Sindhi Literature”, as he translated number dramas
into Sindhi but his way of translation was different. He transliterated /
adapted them into Sindhi atmosphere with Sindhi characters. Mirza
Qaleech Baig had already written 465 books in Sindhi but his work on
Shakespeare is prominent, which also paved way for new learners in the
filed of drama.
After independence, some more plays have been translated into
Sindhi, which prove that impact of Shakespearean Drama on Sindhi,
which was started from 19th Century, is still continuing in 21st century.
