Abstract
RY OF URDU AND PUNJABI LANGUAGE IN PUNJAB Abstract Urdu is declared as official language in place of Persian Language during British Raj in Punjab. After 58 Years of implementation of Urdu,Vice Chancellor of Punjab University Dr. P.C Chester Ji proposed to consider Punjabi instead of Urdu as medium of instruction. This suggestion was strongly opposed by Punjabi scholars like Allama Iqbal. Munshi Mehboob Alam and Munshi Sirajuddin etc and declared Urdu as modernized version of Punjabi. Muslim scholars were doubted of the excessive addition of Sanskrit words instead of Arabian and Persian to make Punjabi a literary language like Bengali and they were afraid of Panjabi losing its Islamic identity. Muslims were not even accepting Nagri and Gurmukhi Scripts. Hafiz Mehmood Sherani proved by writing a book "Urdu in Punjab" in 1928 that Urdu is born in Punjab and Punjabi is its founder language but now national research is emerged against this idea. The three scripts were a big hurdle in implementing Punjabi language. Muslims wanted Persian. Hindus wanted Nagri whereas Sikhs wanted Gurmukhi Script. This was not acceptable for the Government. That is why Government did not acknowledge this issue again
