Abstract
Imam Raghib's full name is Abu Qasim Hussain bin Muhammad bin Mufazal.
Being born in Isfahan, he became known as Imam Raghib Isfahani and it became his title. His
birth year is not confirmed; however, most scholars say that his death occurred in 502 AH.
Although the living conditions of Imam Raghib are not found in the detailed books, it is
agreed that he has spent most of his life in Baghdad and Isfahan, and furthermore that he has
found the time of the fourth century AH and was the contemporary and scholar as the level of
Imam Ghazali (ra). He had great knowledge and grace, and in addition to be the writer of
comprehensive knowledges and arts, he was also the highest saint and his end was very high
in literature and philosophy and all knowledge. Allama Zahbi mentions him in Tabaqat-ul-
Mufasireen and Imam Sayuti has counted him in the Imams of vocabulary and syntax,
introduced him as Hakim, writer and interpreter at different places. In addition to this, other
writers have also declared him the Imam of various knowledge and arts, which suggests that
he was the Imam of all the arts as well as the great Hakim and saint. There are many
authored books by him, from which the most famous book is Al-Mufradat-Fi-Gareeb-ul-
Quran, which is considered by Allama Sayuti as one of the most important book on the
subject of Gareeb Knowledge in which he has interpreted the gareeb words present in 114
Surahs of Quran. The style which he used in this book is unique and it can be said with full
authority that all the gentlemen who have worked on the languages of Qur'an are not only
convinced of the importance of the Mufradat-e-Imam Raghib in this field, but each one has
laid the basis of his dictionary on the same book and has not remained without following
Imam Raghib.
