Abstract
Sol~te accumulation and changes in chlorophyll contents under water deficit conditions were studied in barley cultivars, Jau-87 and S-84728, at the seedling stage. Drought was induced for 9 days to 25 days old barley plants. It caused reduction in sodiur:nand potassium contents of shoot dry matter (mg/g SDM/Day) and root dry matter (mg/g ROM/Day)of both cultivars. Chlorophyll-a and total chlorophyll in plant material (mg/g PM) of either cultivar and chlorophyll-b in plant material of Jau-87 were also suppressed but chlorophyll-b content of S-84728 was enhanced to some extent. However, chlorophyll indices of both the cultivars were increased by the progressivedrought.
