Abstract
A variety of hypotheseH regarding the relationhip of recombi. nation rnyiteni to population genetic structure •were tested with allozyme genetic variation data for three biotin/Illy s:1,-srapatrio and rillated species of Trifolfurri, each with a different recombi-nation. El y.stem, The measures of gene deversity and genotia distanoe statistic's revealed comidorable interpoptlo..tion. differenti-ation in the inbreeder (T. arverim) indicating s relative iaok of ne flow botween its populations. On the other hand, the population@ of both the outhreeders (T. repots it T. pralenze) allowed remarkable genetic similarity which could eloley be attri-buted to the. exc.ensivo gene flow which incurs in. both the speck:la. IN TRODUOTION Reproduction iovolve@ one, of three reicoinbleation systems i.o, outorosaing, se] Ong,. or 010 ni g or YAM C 0 Ela ation of the three (Fryxe 11 1E167). How those rep. ducr,..ive modern affect the genetic. latructrire of a species has been the subject of oonsiclerabl dieennaion. The theory generated by this dieeuesion predicts that ditlaren.t recombination system] ought. to strongly influence the level and dietri-bution of genetic varigition, Pbtterris of hsterossygosity and genetic diflerentiation may he determined hy the recam.biaation System. (Wright, 196Th Brown, 1979; Ell t-raad and Levin', 1960). Populations. of predominant Heifers are expected to havd higher leven of interpopulation differentiation than the obligate outeroesers i;.11.1in, 197d). Theoretical studies also show that Clonal outbreeding species ma.iiitain higher levels of heterozygoaity, both within population Mid opecieg-wide, since thoy can retain mutant allolva by sheltering them from segregation [Lokki, 19710), but they are usually oliarsoterized by low level of interpoptdation genetic diffadatiation (Levin. and Kanter, 1971). The ideal test of these hyrithases would be to compare population structure of throe closely related. sympatriv speole.c an obligate outarosser„ a seller, and a clonal cutbreeder.
