Abstract
This observational study aims to observe instructional strategies used by Government owned school teachers for developing reading and writing skills of English language at secondary level in Southern districts of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa. Three districts D.I.Khan, Lakki Marwat and Kohat were selected from all the three divisions of Southern areas. All the teachers teaching English in these three districts constituted the population of the study. Total twelve teachers (four from each district) were selected through convenient sampling for observing their teaching strategies. Researcher own -developed observational sheet carrying 24 items (twelve items were related to reading skills and other twelve items were related to writing skills) was adopted which was made valid and reliable before its administration. Data were collected during observation and analysed
through chi square test. The results reveal that there is need of improvement for teaching reading and writing skills at Government schools. The study recommends that innovative techniques may be adopted for teaching English at secondary level and the English teachers may be properly updated with innovative techniques.
