Abstract
Colonialism resorts to use and devise all sorts of power to ascertain its control over colonies. There are two major kinds of power that are employed: hard and soft. Education falls under second category. In getting control over minds of native people, it has proved to be a more effective one than hard or brutal kind of power. The English colonizers started 'educational reforms' in late 18th century. Till mid 19th century they had established new educational institutions where medium of instruction was English, with new syllabi that aimed to cater their 'colonial needs'. Though after 1857 vernacular education was introduced at lower level, English had been kept as medium of instruction at higher level. Both kinds of education served the same purpose: to reform Indian society in line with colonial needs. This article seeks to survey briefly history of colonial education policies with analyzing the colonial aspirations of colonizers.
