Abstract
This article aims at interpreting Shibli Nomani's critical writings from the perspective of 'Ambivalence' which is though basically a psychological term, employed in postcolonial studies by Homi K Bhabha and others. Shibli and his contemporaries like Sir Sayyad, Nazir Ahmad and Hali possessed ambivalent views towards Europe. Shibli eulogizes and criticises European culture and her achievements at the same time. His ambivalent thinking doesn't engender any confusion but proves an intellectual strategy to subvert hierarchy of West and East fashioned by colonial powers.
