Criticism of Dr. Saleem Akhtar: Cultural and Civilizational Context
Abstract
The culture of any region the world is unique in its customs, traditions, behaviour and values which bring the people sharing the same culture closer to each other and draw a distinguishing line to show differences with the other cultures. The culture depicts the non material aspects of social life of any nation while civilization reflects the material part of that society. In both culture and civilization, human is the pivotal point of the society who alongwith their companions provide the driving force to both of these social aspects. Pakistani culture is enriched with different kinds of local cultures which give birth to a central culture that exhibits the national perspective of the Pakistani society. Soon after the creation of Pakistan, different writers and critics gave attention to the discourse of culture and civilization in their writings. Dr. Saleem Akhtar is one prominent literary and critical figure among them, who vibrated his pen on the discourse of culture and civilization. In this article, the focus is on the cultural and civilizational thoughts of Dr. Saleem Akhtar. In this respect, Adab aur Culture is one of his finest books which attracted the literary, critical and cultural circles of the sub-continent. He has also explained the issues and problems in building a national culture. He gives a separate conceptual place to both culture and civilization in his writings. Metaphysics, Logic, Creativity and Psychology provide the basis in building a culture, according to him.
