The aim of this article is to study and analyze the role of
Mahnaz as the obscure but foremost feminist rebel in Balochi
pastoral ßoral poetry of sixteenth century. Mahnaz is a
remarkable character in Balochi oral poetry. Her beloved,
Shahdad, falling into the traps of his first wife, Shari, makes
unbecoming allegations of adultery against her. Although they
are head over heels in love, the acrimonious and unsubstantial
allegations, and certainty in Shari's hypocritical words, changes
the manner of their love and trust. Mahnaz strenuously denies
all charges against her honor and sets out to defend her
feminine dignity and conduct. All her protests and assurances of
innocence fall on deaf ears. In the feudalistic society, she has
no other option to prove her innocence but to opt for an age
õold custom where a woman has to walk on smoldering coals
fire as a trial to disprove any allegations against her chastity.
In the end, Mahnaz emerges truthful, forcing Shahdad to recant
his allegations and repent his actions but to no avail. The pure
bonds of love have already rusted under the increasing mistrust
and its attendants þ misgivings and physical punishments.
Mahnaz decides to marry Hoom þer, her alleged õlover. This
research article has used the strands of liberal and radical
feminism õ the former promotes equality and the later view
society as a patriarchal tool to oppress and dominate women.Mahnaz also believes in equality and challenges the allegations
against her dignity which are meant to oppress and dominate
her. Finally, this research paper has used the content of the
story of Mahnaz and Shahdad to interpret the exceptional role
of Mahnaz.
