Abstract
Sassui is a unique, dominant and a legendary character of the poetry of Shah Abdul Latif Bhitai, who devoted five ‘Surs’(chapters) of his Risalo to this heroine and presented her as a symbol of struggle, courage, patience and determination. Shah Abdul Latif Bhitai travelled in most of the southern parts of presentday Balochistan and not only, got himself well-acquainted with the Balochi tradition of poetry prevailing at that time, but used Balochi words mainly in ‘Sur Desi’ of his Risalo in such a nice manner and craft that these words form a part of Sindhi language as well. There is a good enough number of verses of ‘Sur Desi’ which contain words, phrases and idioms of Balochi language mainly that of Makran Dialect. In order to highlight this aspect of Shah’s poetry, many editions, ranging from Dr. Earnest Trump to Mr. Banho Khan Shaikh of Shah-Jo-Risalo have been referred to and comparison of the verses has been so as to reach at logical conclusion of the discussion. Besides, meaning of the Balochi words has been given which greatly helps out understand the content and theme of the poetry. It is hoped, this article would attract the attention of respectable readers as well as earn a due appreciation on their part in connection with the craftsmanship of Shah Abdul Latif Bhitai as far as his use of Balochi language in ‘Sur Desi’ is concerned.
