Abstract
After the creation of Pakistan, the Urdu literary critics who penned
down the identity of Pakistan and tried to establish Pakistani culture in their
writings, one cannot ignore the works of Dr. Saleem Akhter a renowned
researcher, fiction writer and a critic of various aspects. His book entitled
'literature and culture' reflects his profound view point on the subject of
culture, civilization and their relation with nationhood and state entity. He is
of the view that like nationality, the culture of a nation springs from the
identity of that nation that is why it reflects the aspirations and wishes of the
people comprising the nation. The people who want to establish their
identity and who feel proud of their country, have to constitute their culture.
Unfortunately in Pakistan racialism, provincial prejudices, territorial
narrow-mindedness hatred and biases have been prevailing, which should
be set aside. In America people have mixed various cultures (local cultures)
into one national culture, following this example people of Pakistan can also
merge their local cultures into a single and sound national culture. Dr.
Saleem Akhter also draws the attention of the readers towards the role of
political supremacy in the development of culture. The political power in a
country has a strong impact on the culture of the nation, the slave nations
are bound to follow the footsteps of their strong rules. This is alarming
especially when some nations remain in the intellectual and mental slavery
of the colonial administrators, even after the independence. Preserving the
culture means setting free the soul and spirit of one's nationhood.
